Being one of the few insurance companies of that time, all the offices of Lakshmi insurance were prefixed Lakshmi. Another famous such building was Lakshmi Mansion, located near mall road, whose façade in Lahore still survives. Lakshmi mansion is best known for the eminent personalities associated with it including the Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto and Sarojini Naidu. When Manto came to Pakistan in 1948 following the partition riots, he lived with his wife and family in a room in Lakshmi mansion, located near Butt Tikka. The three storied building was built by Lala Lajpat Rai's Lakshmi insurance company in 1938, inaugurated by Sarojini Naidu, and was at one time the residence of K.Santhanam, an eminent lawyer and the family of a jeweler called Girdharilal. However, it was abandoned during the partition riots of 1947-48. The mansion is currently dilapidated and uninhabited, though its façade still exists, renovated and painted.

Very famous place in Lahore ...it's famous for old buildings ...
Badly preserved yet standing tall and proud against all the odds. A landmark sight of old Lahore and once home to the legendary progressive writer and intellectual Sadat Hasan Manto
Historical landmark, ‘Who cares, it’s just a building’ In violation of its own ‘The Punjab Special Premises (Preservation) Ordinance, 1985,’ the Punjab government has made alterations in the historic Lakshmi Building that it had earlier declared to be a ‘special premise’. The Lakshmi Building, which was constructed way before the partition, is associated with the memories of Hindus and Sikhs. The Punjab government, however, has completely painted it camel white and blue. The history of the building traces back to the pre-partition era. The Lakshmi Building located on Lakshmi Chowk of today was owned by Lakshmi Insurance Corporation in 1935. It was later used by the Muslim League of Hindustan who gathered here for meetings and social events. This building also has the honour of housing renowned personalities like former PM Meraj Khalid, short story writer Saadat Hassan Manto, former FM Zafarullah Chaudhry and India’s petroleum minister Mani Shankar Aiyar. SPECIAL PREMISE’ The structure is one of the 116 buildings in Lahore which has been declared as “special premises” by the Punjab government under The Punjab Special Premises (Preservation), Ordinance, 1985. The ordinance defines special buildings as “…premises of historical, cultural or architectural value declared as such by the Government by notification and includes the land externally appurtenant thereto and the outer walls thereof”. The ordinance further clearly states that such building cannot be changed, altered or modified without the permission of the government.
