South Punjab Forest Company (SPFC), is a Punjab Government entity, established under section 42 of the Companies Ordinance, 1984, as a Public Sector Company. The company aims to streamline public and private sector investments to reduce deforestation in Punjab and combine forest conservation with sustainable economic development. SPFC aims to encourage investments in assets that can be established and managed on an environmentally and socially sustainable basis. The company comes under the Forestry, Wildlife & Fisheries Department, Government of the Punjab, and has been assigned a blank area of 134,995 acres comprising of 42 forest sites across 6 districts of South Punjab, which include Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Muzaffargarh and Bahawalnagar. SPFC aspires for combining socially and environmentally responsible forestry investments, through the participation of wood based industries. The emphasis will be made on investments in high biological growth plantations and aligned with the three pillars of SPFC’s business philosophy which include: • Social and environmental sustainability • A balanced portfolio of wood fibre end-uses • Cost and quality competitive projects SPFC will help to promote sustainable forestry and reduce logging pressure on the existing forests, as Pakistan is witnessing deforestation at the rate of 2.1 per cent per annum - from 1990 till 2015 on an average (according to Food and Agriculture Organization). The role of forests is immense, from poverty eradication to ensuring water and food security, as well as the opportunities that the SDGs provide for recognizing the forestry sector.
