Built by Sir Khem Sing Bedi (locally called Baba Bedi) in late 19th century, Bedi Mehal or Bedi Palace was the residence of Khem Singh Bedi who acted as a Magistrate during British rule in 1877. A four storied building that has beautiful frescoes and paintings inside is in quite a depleted state. It is part of a Govt School and has been used to house classes for decades after 1947 till few years back when the building was considered not safe for conducting classes anymore. The new building of the school is in the same premises. The palace definitely needs maintenance and year round care. Archaeology Dept needs to pay attention and take over the building from the school principal who, despite all his efforts, has no resources to maintain such a big structure. It takes around 40 mins from Rawat Junction to reach the palace. Many narrow streets lead to the palace so beware, there are all the chances of getting lost. Ask locals for a parking place near the school.

Bedi Mehal: Located in Kallar Sayeedan near Rawalpindi, this was the haveli of Baba Khem Singh Bedi. The haveli is a time capsule - it has remained closed since 1947 - that is why it is so well preserved. See beautiful frescos in it below. During the time of Bedi family from early 1800s onwards, it was referred to as Kallar Bedian but after 1947 the name reverted back to Kallar Sayeedan. Baba Khem Singh Bedi claimed to be 14th in direct descent from Sri Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Ji.

The beautiful precious historic building I would say.. one of the most beautiful Masterpieces of the architecture of the Sikh era. Just in the heart of the city Kalar Syedan. Unfortunately because of the carelessness of the Punjab government and relevant authorities, this building has been dilapidated. The Punjab government should have to take action and restore this beautiful Palace to the real condition.
